Fulham vs Liverpool Team News & Stats

Mixed emotions will accompany Liverpool on their annual trip to the Thames. The squad will reflect fondly on how they beat the hosts 5-2 in this fixture last season with a breathless and, at times, awesome, attacking display, but there will also be sadness at the recent loss of Lucas Leiva to a season-ending knee injury

Match Fact:
1. Head-to-head

Liverpool beat Fulham 5-2 at Craven Cottage in this fixture last season, Maxi Rodriguez scoring his second hat-trick in three games.

Fulham have failed to score in six of their last eight Premier League games against Liverpool.

In 20 Premier League games between the two clubs (going back to 2001), Fulham have won just three.

Liverpool beat Fulham 10-0 in a League Cup second-round match at Anfield in 1986.

2. Fulham

Fulham have won just one of their last eight Premier League games at Craven Cottage (W1 D4 L3), a run which started with that 2-5 defeat by Liverpool in May.

This is Fulham's joint-worst record, in terms of points gained, after 13 games.

Their 12 to date ranks alongside their total in 2005-2006 and 2007-2008.

Headers account for just 7% of Fulham's goals. That is the lowest percentage in the Premier League.

3. Liverpool

Liverpool are unbeaten in 11 matches in all competitions.

They have allowed their opponents fewer shots on target against them than any other team in the Premier League (44).

Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez averages 8.2 touches per game inside the opposition penalty area, more than any other top-flight player.

Dalglish: Gerrard progress 'hugely encouraging' and well on his way to recovery."

Kenny Daglish has allayed fears that Steven Gerrard could be set for a lengthy layoff by claiming the Liverpool captain is 'well on his way' to full fitness.

Gerrard has made only five appearances for the Reds since March following a succession of injury setbacks relating, in the main, to a persistent groin complaint.

However, Gerrard is currently sidelined with an ankle infection, and has been forced to sit out of Liverpool's last two encounters, as well as the England squad that will face Spain.

Dalglish, though, was able to give a positive update on the progress of his captain following the weekend's goalless draw with Swansea City.

"He's fine," said the Liverpool boss. "Everything been checked and the figures are hugely encouraging and well on his way to recovery."

Liverpool were left frustrated by the Swans at Anfield on Saturday as Michel Vorm, in particular, excelled for Brendan Rodgers' side.

And Dalglish concedes his side still have plenty of things to work on in order to improve their all-round performance.

"We just need to keep working on it and keep getting in there," he added.

"But we haven't got in there as often as we have done in the past games. They are problems we can solve ourselves.

"We have to look at ourselves and expect better performances than what we produced there."

Agger slams Liverpool's 'headless chickens'

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has warned Liverpool must raise their game if they are to avoid yet another season without Champions League football.

Liverpool were held to a goalless draw in Saturday's home meeting with Swansea at the weekend, meaning the club have now won just two of their six Premier League matches at Anfield this season.

"Sometimes we looked like headless chickens running around after the ball,'' Agger said in quotes reported by the Daily Express. "It is far from good enough. Everyone was angry and disappointed - some more than others - but that is the way it is.''

Despite their indifferent form, Kenny Dalglish's men are just three points off the Champions League berths in sixth place - but with games against Chelsea and leaders Manchester City looming, Agger admits now is the time to raise the standard.

"If we play like this, we won't do it [qualify for the Champions League],'' he said. We have got to move up a level or two. I won't say it is not possible, because it is, but it is up to the players. We are the only ones who can make a difference. We definitely have to do a lot better.''

'We need to be winning games like that' - Stewart Downing

Stewart Downing has insisted Liverpool will keep working hard after another disappointing home draw against Swansea City, but admits that his side should be winning home fixtures against newly promoted sides.

Brendan Rodgers' men are the fourth visiting team to grab a point at Anfield this season in just six games, damaging Kenny Dalglish's side's chase for a Champions League spot.

Downing told the club's official website: "Swansea are a good footballing team and they've played well this season, but with no disrespect to them we need to be winning games like that at home if we want to get to where we want to be, so it was a bit disappointing for us not to get the three points."

He added: "It was disappointing to draw, but although Swansea played quite well, if we had put our chances away and scored early it might have been different.

"Probably the pleasing thing for the manager and the team is that we are creating chances. But we're not putting them away.

"We'll just have to keep working on it and keep getting ourselves in the right positions and hopefully they'll turn into goals soon."

The winger pointed to several key chances the Reds failed to finish and hailed the form of Swans goalkeeper Michel Vorm after he made two crucial late stops to keep the scores level.

He continued: "If Andy [Carroll] had scored with that early chance, it may have been a different game - Swansea might have had to change the way they played.

"It was a brilliant save from Glen's [Johnson] shot. I think the goalkeeper has probably been their best player this season, which shows how well he's done.

"But we had chances through Daniel [Agger], Glen as well as Andy's right at the start, and I'm not sure if Dirk's [Kuyt] goal was offside or not."

King Kenny calm despite missed chances

Failure to score against Swansea on Saturday brought just a point for the Reds, their second in succession against a promoted side at Anfield after Norwich drew 1-1 a fortnight ago.

Having also not taken advantage of good opportunities against Sunderland and Manchester United at home, the Reds have dropped eight points at home already this season.

"You are better drawing one, losing one and winning one because you get more points than three draws," admitted the Scot.

"But my perspective has never changed. We look forward to the next game, take each one as it comes and eventually add up the points and see where we are.

"There is no difference."

It is not as if Dalglish's side have not been creating chances. Even against the Swans - whose own performance earned them many plaudits - they could have won comfortably.

The tone was set when Andy Carroll blasted Stewart Downing's left-wing cross at the crossbar from six yards with less than 10 minutes on the clock.

They also found visiting goalkeeper Michel Vorm in great form, denying Luis Suarez with one low save in the first half before producing two brilliant efforts to keep out the Uruguay striker and a fierce Glen Johnson volley moments before the final whistle.

That aspect does not concern Dalglish as much as the way his team allowed themselves to be dominated and occasionally out-played by the Barclays Premier League newcomers.

"The most important thing is to create the chances and the next thing is to put them away," he added.

"We go through this nearly after every game. We must be getting closer if the goalkeeper was tested because we have been missing the target.

"We just need to keep working on it and keep getting in there but we never got in there as much as we have done.

"It is more noticeable when you have chances and you walk off with just a point. It punishes you more.

"But it doesn't matter what your reward is, you have to find a better level than we did.

"If you don't do what you are good at you make it more difficult for yourself.

"But the problems that are there are problems that we can solve ourselves."

Swansea picked up only their second away point of the season but manager Brendan Rodgers felt it could be significant one.

His side have already won many fans for the attacking way they play football and enjoy possession and there were times, particularly in the second half, when it looked like it may bring them an historic first win at Anfield.

Reds goalkeeper Jose Reina was forced into one good save in the first half from Wayne Routledge's cross-shot but he would have been powerless to stop Mark Gower's shot six minutes from time had the midfielder kept his effort down.

"To come to Anfield there is pressure but when you come here and play like we did psychologically it gives you a massive lift going forward," said Rodgers.

"I felt we made a big step forward. We have been growing into the league away from home and we showed we are learning all the time.

"I have an inherent belief in the game I want to play - there might be other coaches who think you have to play a different way.

"We have got very good players. They work tirelessly hard and people respect how we are trying to approach the game.

"We played very well. We matched Liverpool at Anfield, which was incredible."

Keegan backs Carroll to succeed with Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker Kevin Keegan says that Andy Carroll has the required attributes to be a success at Anfield, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Carroll moved to the Reds from Newcastle United for £35 million in January, but has struggled for form with his new side, managing just four league goals since his move.

However, Keegan, who briefly managed Carroll during his second spell in charge of the Magpies three years ago, believes the young forward prove to be a hit on Merseyside.

“What people tend to forget about Andy is that he’s still only young,” said Keegan. “His best days are ahead of him and there’s still a way to go before he fully reaches his potential. He is outstanding in the air, probably the best I’ve ever seen.”

Stoke City 1 Liverpool 2: match report

Luis Suarez was only a mere teenager when Liverpool last lifted any form of silverware but Kenny Dalglish's hopes of ending the embarrassing drought are improving after an outstanding evening from the Uruguay international.

Suarez produced a devastating display and two exquisitely taken goals to finally end Liverpool's struggles at this most unforgiving of venues.

His winner three minutes from time enabled the visitors to condemn Stoke City to only their second defeat in 22 home games and maybe Dalglish can end this campaign with something tangible, with the FA Cup triumph five years ago an unwanted statistic.

Liverpool may have won the League Cup more than any other club, an impressive seven times, but their experiences of this competition have been frustrating since Gerard Houllier lifted the trophy in 2003.

Their last victory at the unforgiving Britannia Stadium was an 8-0 triumph in November 2000 but Stoke are made of far sterner stuff now, with Tony Pulis continually etching chapters into the club's recent history with each passing campaign.

So why do referees make so many mistakes?

David Moyes was spot on in his assessment that Martin Atkinson had spoiled what was building up to be a scintillating Merseyside derby. No one is suggesting he did this deliberately. Whilst his decision to send of Jack Rodwell, for a supposedly reckless tackle favoured Liverpool, Atkinson’s last red card in this fixture (the dismissal of Sotirios Kyrgiakos) favoured Everton.

People will no doubt point to the fact that the Greek defender’s dismissal was justified, which it certainly was. However, Atkinson neglected to send off Fellani for his two-footed lunge in the same tackle.

The main issue is that Martin Atkinson made a mistake. What has been debated since last Saturday is should he have been made to come out and explain his decision to red card Rodwell; to explain what it was he saw at Goodison Park that no one else in the stadium or at home could see. After all, numerous replays proved that Atkinson had a completely unobstructed view of the incident. Admittedly, the theatrics of Suarez didn’t help the situation, but the referee is expected to judge the challenge in itself.

Moyes’ criticism, whilst fully justified here will have come as no surprise. In general, managers, it must be said are quick to scape-goat refs. If their star striker misses a hatful of chances, but the ref fails to give a throw-in on the halfway line they’ll always blame the ref.

If Arsene Wenger was a sitcom character his catchphrase would be ‘I didn’t see it’. But this only applies to misdemeanours committed by his own side. I recall a game a few years ago at Anfield where he claimed Liverpool’s equaliser came from a corner that shouldn’t have been given (despite repeated replays proving inconclusive).

Referees exist in a one-shot world. They have seconds to make a decision and they must always make it correctly. When they don’t, the fans and the media converge on them. We’re all armchair pundits who have screamed for a penalty, then accused the referee of bias against ‘us’ only for a replay to prove there was no offence. Referees don’t have that luxury.

Just why anyone would want to be a referee anyway is beyond me. Every week there are tales of abuse and, particularly in the amateur leagues of violence against the match officials. Even at children’s levels the abuse from parents borders on criminal. The men, women and occasionally teenagers who referee these matches get paid around £50 a match. Hardly worth it for what they put up with. In 2009 assaults on referees occurred over 300 times.

Football at the elite level is now a billion pound industry where errors cost points and relegation costs tens of millions. The sport is also far quicker than it was, requiring referees to be capable of certain levels of fitness. One recalls Sir Alex Ferguson questioning the fitness of Alan Wiley after a game with Sunderland. Ferguson scoffed: ‘He was not fit enough for a game of that standard…it is an indictment of our game.’ Prozone stats showed that Wiley had run nearly 12km during the game, more than all bar seven of the players on the pitch.
The pace of the game is important when considering the decisions referees have to make. Thanks to Sky the armchair fan is used to seeing the same incident in super slow motion from five or six different angles. After all this analysis they will then make their assessment on whether the decision was correct.

The referees have none of that. They make their decision based on one viewing at normal time and have to make it in a matter of seconds. It is inevitable that they will make mistakes. Managerial pressure is another aspect of the game that referees have to deal with. Alex Ferguson has made a career out of questioning the official’s decisions but, in the case of Martin Atkinson (him again) he actually questioned the official himself: ‘You want a fair referee, or a strong referee anyway… when I saw who the referee was I feared it. I feared the worst.’ But Fergie is by no means the only one. As stated earlier Wenger has been hyper-critical over the years, and in the short space of time Kenny Dalglish has been back in the Anfield dugout he has complained about the reds’ treatment, especially this season.

The FA has tried to instil a respect for referees. Managers are no longer able to question the men with the whistle, although they can still criticise the decision. In 2008 they announced a scheme which would see them pump in £44million a year into grass roots schemes, one of which was the retention of referees. There has also been the much-maligned ‘Respect’ campaign.

But sometimes it is undeniable that referees have only themselves to blame. I recall in 2008 Javier Mascherano being sent off at Old Trafford. His offence was to continue his complaints at the referee, Steve Bennett even after being instructed to move away. Despite team mates and his manager trying to get him to end his protestations, he carried them on until Bennett showed a second yellow card. At the time I agreed with the decision.

Mascherano was warned and failed to heed that warning and the referee should be shown more respect. However, in the ensuing weeks Bennett took varying levels of abuse in other games from different players without giving so much as a free kick. What this did was to undermine the original decision and set the campaign back.

Premier League referees are paid upward of £90,000 a year. Put against the salaries of the footballers around them it appears a small sum, but when compared to the national average wage (around £25,000 a year) it is a good level of pay. This may go some way to answering the question of why these men put themselves through it (Sunday league referees pay is insignificant again, but neither do they have to deal with the media scrutiny).

As we have found all too often in football, money can transform itself into arrogance. Referees have been seen turning up to games in fancy sports cars with personalised registration plates (a number of which feature the word ‘ref’). Many fans have also seen referees signing autographs as if they are somehow part of the entertainment.

In his autobiography, Jeff Winter wrote of his final game (at Anfield): “I played a little bit of extra time, waiting until play was at the Kop end, before sounding the final shrill blast . . . the fans behind the goal burst into spontaneous applause. It was longer and louder than normal, even for a big home win. Did they know it was my final visit? Was it applause for me? They are such knowledgeable football people, it would not surprise me.”

I’m sure there won’t be any fan that doesn’t come to the same conclusion upon reading that…and it certainly endorses the assessment that some referees are plain arrogant. Of course, not all referees are the same. And Winter does come across as one of the more pompous whenever he appears on television. But an undercurrent of arrogance does seem to travel with the officials.

Many of them are invited to come out and speak after games but they refuse almost all the time. A journalist wrote recently of a referee who sent off Joseph Yobo in an Everton game for being the ‘last man’. The ref in question called David Moyes the following day and said that, whilst he hadn’t wanted to send the Nigerian off, he’d been left with no choice due to the (at the time) new interpretation of the rules’. Moyes appreciated the gesture and the two men parted with no ill-feeling.

Similarly, Rob Styles, back in 2007 contacted Rafa Benitez when he incorrectly awarded Chelsea a penalty that gave them a draw. He was stood down from Premier League action. This was unusual as, normally, the FA backs the referees 100% and in a way they have little choice. There can be no doubt about the organisation’s faith in its officials.

In spite of this many Everton fans will never forget the handling by Mark Clattenburg of the 2007 Goodison Merseyside derby. On that day Clattenburg sent off Tony Hibbert, awarded Liverpool a couple of penalties and denied Everton two penalties of their own, as well as dismissing two Everton players. The ref was excused from action the following week but neither he, nor the FA has ever admitted culpability. However, in the four years since, Clattenburg has never refereed Everton in the Premier league suggesting that the FA are all-too aware of his performance that day.

So, should referees be made to speak to the camera after a game? In my opinion the answer is no. Yes they make mistakes, and yes they cost teams points. But so do the players (who do it on a more regular basis), not to mention bad managerial selections. A red-carded player, or a striker that missed a sitter, or a goalkeeper that dropped a ball aren’t all summoned as a matter of obligation to go before the cameras.

Of course, we have more respect for them if they do come out and ‘explain themselves’, and I believe referees might start getting treated more as human individuals if they too did it for the more contentious issues. I don’t know anyone who, immediately after the challenge thought that Rodwell’s tackle warranted a red, so it would be interesting to know why Martin Atkinson thought it was.

Whether they like it or not (and judging by Jeff Winter’s comments they do like it) referees are a big part of football. To me, their opinions and views are as intriguing as managers and players and for this reason I think they should make more of an effort not to be cocooned away by the FA and Premier League. However, to force them to subject themselves to the glare of the media spotlight and be scrutinised on every decision they make in a match just puts them under even more pressure, and subject to even more of, what are human errors.

Steven Gerrard to begin light training at Liverpool

Steven Gerrard will return to light training with Liverpool this week as the club captain continues his recovery from the infection that ruined his start to the new Premier League season.

The Liverpool midfielder has not featured for Kenny Dalglish's team since March due to groin surgery and his scheduled return in August was postponed when he suffered an infection related to the operation. Gerrard was released from hospital almost a fortnight ago and has been granted permission to resume light training. "Stevie will be stepping up his recovery this week," Dalglish said.

Liverpool have not, however, revised Gerrard's comeback date of mid-September and the 31-year-old is expected to miss England's European Championship qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales at the start of next month.

Martin Skrtel will also return to training at Melwood this week as he recovers from a calf injury suffered in pre-season, but the luckless Fábio Aurélio is facing another extended period on the sidelines having damaged his achilles tendon in training on Friday. Liverpool have yet to discover the full extent of the injury-prone defender's problem.

Aurélio's untimely absence forced Dalglish to hand an immediate Liverpool debut to José Enrique against Sunderland on Saturday, despite the Spanish left-back completing a £6m move from Newcastle United only 24 hours earlier.

José Enrique enjoyed an assured start to his Liverpool career and said Andy Carroll, his former Newcastle team-mate and now Anfield colleague, will justify his £35m price-tag now he has overcome the thigh and knee injuries that interrupted his debut season on Merseyside.

"Andy was brilliant for us at Newcastle and I am sure he will be the same for Liverpool," José Enrique said. "He is a very, very good player. When a club like Liverpool pays £35m for Andy, I know it is not by chance. It is because they think he is a good player.

"I watched him play last season and I knew he wasn't fit here. I don't care if the player is Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, if a player is not fit, then he cannot play properly. He is playing very well in his position and he is going to be an important player this season."

David Ngog to Aston Villa?

The Liverpool summer clear out may be about to start now. The Liverpool Echo is reporting that David Ngog may be leaving Liverpool for £4million with Aston Villa and Fulham interested in the 22-year-old striker.

It had been suggested that Ngog was going to move to Sunderland but now that they have signed Connor Wickham, it is very unlikely that they would want to buy another striker this summer.

In May it was said that Damien Comolli valued Ngog at £8million which at the time raised a lot of eyebrows as many fans did not think Ngog was worth that much. It would be great for the club to get £8million but £4million may be a more realistic fee for him and that would be a good business deal for us as we only bought him for a reported £1million from PSG three years ago.

Ngog has managed to score 19 goals in 94 appearances for Liverpool. That is not such a great return for a striker but considering his age, he still has a lot to learn and he will probably get better with time but we do not have that much time to invest in him anymore at Liverpool thus the reason for us needing to get rid of him and bring in a more prolific striker as backup to Suarez and Carroll.

The 31-year-old will continue his individual recovery programme at the Reds' Melwood training ground while the majority of the squad fly out to China on Sunday ahead of their first friendly two days later.

"I'd really been looking forward to travelling out to China, Malaysia and Singapore and meeting first-hand as many of our fans as possible," the England international told liverpoolfc.tv.

"I'm really sorry that I won't now be able to do that.

"But after sitting down and talking with the medical experts and technical staff, it's been decided that the best course of action is for me to continue my rehabilitation programme at Melwood.

"It's disappointing I won't be with them, but I'm sure the lads who go out there will put a great show on for our fans."

Gerrard underwent an operation in early March to correct a troublesome groin problem which had been affecting him for some months.

He was ruled out for the remainder of the season and last month Gerrard hinted he may not be fully fit for Liverpool's early friendlies.

Gerrard returned to training with the rest of the squad at Melwood yesterday but was not involved with the main group of players.

"Steven and the medical team have done fantastically well so far and they are in the final stages of getting him back to full training," said manager Kenny Dalglish.

"I'm sure there will be supporters disappointed that Steven is unable to be with us in Asia, but I'm sure the same people will appreciate the importance of Steven giving himself the best possible opportunity of being fit to play against Sunderland on the opening day of the new campaign.

"Steven continuing his rehabilitation programme at Melwood is in everybody's long term interests."

Gerrard: Back in pre-season training

Gerrard missed the last two and a half months of the season after a groin operation in March but did some work away from the main group as he continued his rehabilitation.

Record signing Carroll struggled for fitness after arriving in January from Newcastle with a thigh problem but he was involved with the rest of the squad.

Defender Martin Kelly, whose season was ended by a hamstring in February, was also involved as was Daniel Agger, who was sidelined with a knee injury from early April.

Also training was Alberto Aquilani, back at the club after a year out on loan at Juventus.

The Serie A club did not take up their option to sign the Italy international and although he has returned to Merseyside he is thought to be one of a number of players manager Kenny Dalglish is looking to offload to free up space on the wage bill to bring in more new signings.

Also believed to be on that list are Christian Poulsen and Joe Cole and they too were put through their paces in the sunshine at Melwood.

Vice-captain Jamie Carragher is keen to pick up where last season left off.

"We've had longer than usual off this year and I want to get started now," he said.

"It's a new start and there's a new sense of optimism. It's going to be great to have most of the players around from the start of pre-season.

"Our form in the second half of last season was very good and we need to ensure we prepare well and get off to a decent start this season.

"That will make a big difference. It can be difficult with the preparations when everyone comes back in dribs and drabs.

"It's good for the manager to have everyone around and it means after a decent pre-season we should be ready to start the season.

"It will be great to see all the lads again and I'm sure there will be a few new faces coming in before the transfer window closes."

New £16million signing Jordan Henderson was absent as he was given extended leave having been involved with England Under-21s at the European Championships last month.

However, one new arrival out on the training ground was coach Steve Keen, appointed to the backroom staff yesterday, getting up to speed with manager Dalglish and first team coach Steve Clarke with director of football Damien Comolli also watching from the sidelines.

"I feel really privileged, proud and honoured to be here and to be part of such a fantastic club," Keen told liverpoolfc.tv.

"In my eyes Liverpool are one of the greatest clubs in the world so I am really quite humbled to be here.

"I was back coaching at West Ham for nine years and was a player at West Ham for nine years as well, so they have been a big part of my life but when I got the call from Liverpool I thought the timing was perfect for me.

"To come here and be a part of what Kenny, Steve Clarke, Damien and the owners are looking to do in taking the club forward is very exciting.

"I know Steve very well from my West Ham days and learnt a lot from him when he was assistant manager to Gianfranco Zola.

"He's very meticulous with his planning, he's a fantastic coach and a really nice person to work with.

"I want to come in here and to contribute to us winning trophies for the supporters.

"We've a lot of work to do between now and the first match of the season against Sunderland but for me, this is where I want to be.

"I want to be out training and to help players improve, whether they're 16, 17 or 18 or whether they're 33. I want to get the best out of everyone."

Liverpool have also appointed Andrew Parkinson to become the club's first operations director from September 5.

Parkinson, currently the general manager for Bluewater, one of Europe's leading retail and leisure destinations, will be responsible for customer services, ticketing, hospitality and stadium operations.

“This is a bigger summer for Comolli than Dalglish”

Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph feels that director of football Damien Comolli will be held responsible for any unsuccessful signings this summer, not manager Kenny Dalglish.

He feels that Comolli is the main force behind a Liverpool transfer strategy that has so far seen Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson signed for large transfer fees. And with countless other players linked with moves to Anfield, there are expected to be a number of other summer recruits.

“This is a bigger summer for Comolli than it is for Dalglish,” he explains. “I think Dalglish is involved in all these signings, but I think they have Comolli’s print on them if you look at the sort of players.

“He’s almost replicating what he did at Tottenham, but at a higher premium. If you look at the younger players he brought in at Tottenham, he’s doing that similarly with young, British players at Liverpool, but paying a lot more for them.

“So, if this doesn’t work, then he will carry the can, not Kenny Dalglish.”

Now Arsenal want to sign Stewart Downing

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is determined to land the England winger, but no deal has yet been agreed because Aston Villa have put a £20 million price tag on the player.

The lack of progress in Downing's expected move to Anfield has left the door open for bids from other clubs and it appears Arsenal are ready to take advantage of the situation.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is prepared to match Villa's asking price in order to get his man, reports the Sunday Mirror.

Wenger is determined to add a creative player to his squad before the new season gets underway, as he is facing the prospect of losing Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and possibly also seeing Samir Nasri leave.

Downing does not enjoy the same standing in the game as Fabregas and Nasri, but the 26-year-old is a proven Premier League performer who would need little time to adapt.

Arsenal are also targeting another player with experience in the English top-flight, Bolton defender Gary Cahill, but Wenger has not abandoned his policy of searching for the pick of the rising overseas stars.

He is close to finalising a deal to sign Ivory Coast forward Gervinho from Lille and has also made a bid for Velez Sarsfield midfielder Ricardo Alvarez, although Inter Milan are reported to have topped that offer

Liverpool want to sign Jose Enrique after failing to land Arsenal's Gael Clichy

After Manchester City have apparently beaten them to the signature of Arsenal's French defender, the Reds have reportedly revived their long-term interest in Newcastle defender

Liverpool will reportedly turn their attention back to Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique after failing in their bid to land Arsenal's Gael Clichy, according to The News of the World.

Manchester City have apparently beaten the Reds to the signing of Clichy, so Liverpool are said to be reviving their interest in Enrique, who has been a target for the Anfield club after impressing for the Magpies last season.

Reds' boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to strengthen his options at left-back and has also been linked with a move for England defender Leighton Baines, but was apparently put off by neighbours Everton’s £20 (€22) million valuation.

However, he has been tracking Enrique for a number of months. Ironically, when the Spaniard left Villarreal for the Premier League in August 2007, Liverpool (then managed by Rafael Benitez) were one of the clubs, along with Manchester City, whom Newcastle beat to his signature.

Liverpool keen on signing James Milner

Manchester City midfielder James Milner is reportedly a target for Liverpool

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from Eastlands for several weeks, with former club Aston Villa believed to be interested in taking the England international back to Villa Park.

But according to Caughtoffside.com, Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is monitoring Milner's availability and could look to lure him to Merseyside.

Milner moved to City last August in a £26million deal and made a bright start to the 2010/11 campaign, before finding himself warming the bench more often in the second half of the season.

With the likes of Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez and Arsenal's Samir Nasri recently linked with moves to City, there is a growing feeling that Milner could be offloaded by manager Roberto Mancini before the start of next season.

And Liverpool are in a position to finance a move for the former Newcastle player, who would reportedly cost around £20m.

Dalglish has already splashed out £20m on Jordan Henderson this summer, while Blackpool captain Charlie Adam and Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing are still targets for the Scot.

But should a move for either player fail to go through - and in Downing's case it appears the Merseysiders are unwilling to meet Villa's £20m valuation - then a move for Milner may well become a possibility.

Liverpool have to pay £9 million for Charlie Adam

Blackpool have told Liverpool that they will have to pay the Seasiders £9m to sign target Charlie Adam, the Daily Mirror reports.

Reds manager Kenny Dalglish has been a long term admirer of the 26 year old and made a bid in the January transfer window for the midfielder. Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston is determined to make the most out of the Blackpool captain and has bumped up the valuation to try and cash in on the Scottish international.

Liverpool’s owners may be reluctant to meet Blackpool’s valuation and Dalglish could lose out on the deal, despite how much Dalglish and Adam want the deal to happen. Adam is in the last year of his contract at Bloomfield Road and is looking to move to Merseyside to increase his ambitions of playing in the Champions League and challenging for the Premiership.

Kenny Dalglish: Steven Gerrard's has been fantastic so far

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has said Steven Gerrard has made “fantastic” progress as he seeks to return to full fitness ahead of the new season.

Injury ended the midfielder's season prematurely back in March, with the 31-year-old having been unable to feature since the club's 3-1 win over champions Manchester United at Anfield.

However, the Liverpool skipper is recovering well after groin surgery and the Merseyside boss, who rejuvenated a deflated Liverpool squad when he took over in January, is hopeful the midfielder will be back from injury for the opening game of the Premier League campaign against Sunderland.

“We start back Monday so we'll see how everybody is then," he told the club’s official website.

"Everything that has been done has been very positive for Steven so we are just hoping for the best for him.

“He deserves a bit of luck on the injury front. We won't put him under any undue pressure. All we'll say [is] everything has been fantastic so far.”

As well as praising his skipper, the manager commented that the club are looking to bring new faces to Anfield but refused to say who his top transfer targets are.

“I wouldn't mention anyone as a target for us," adding the Scot.

“We are obviously trying to bring people in and people are trying to take players from us.

“We are not going to speculate and be disrespectful and talk about other people at other clubs.

“Every manager I've seen interviewed on television has said exactly the same thing. That's the way it should be.”

IN KING KENNY WE TRUST. YNWA!!!

Liverpool to continue to buy young with offer for French teenager

Niang made a large impact at Italian club Caen towards the finish of last season, scoring goals in five games after making his debut in April against Toulouse.

Liverpool have definitely had eye on the future when finalizing their most recent transfers & they appear set to continue this owner as they prepare to make an offer for M'Baye Niang.

It is believed that Tottenham have already put together a £7m package to tempt the Ligue one team, who may be reluctant to sell having already allowed fellow striker Youssef El-Arabi to discuss terms over a likely move to Serie A club Genoa.

These displays from the 16-year-old have resulted in some solid interest from the Premier League, with Manchester City & Tottenham among the clubs keeping tabs on any transfer activity.

However, this offer seems unlikely to deter Liverpool, who have made signing youth their priority ahead of this season.

Jordan Henderson has already arrived for £20m from Sunderland, while Eden Hazard remains a leading target from Lille.

Niang is of Senegalese descent & has already represented Germany at under-16 & under-17 level.

Principal owner John W Henry has already indicated that buying gifted youth is the way forward for Liverpool, as not only is their scope for further improvement, but there is also the likelihood of strong sell-on values.

However, the large dilemma is whether they would be best served to stay at Caen for at least more season to aid his development, as they is likely to profit from more first-team opportunities this way in the next 12 months.

Liverpool are 1/1 in the Premier League betting to break back in to the top this season & with players including Charlie Adam & Stewart Downing still largely expected to move to Anfield before the beginning of the campaign, this might show first rate value.
