Kenny Dalglish: Steven Gerrard's has been fantastic so far

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has said Steven Gerrard has made “fantastic” progress as he seeks to return to full fitness ahead of the new season.

Injury ended the midfielder's season prematurely back in March, with the 31-year-old having been unable to feature since the club's 3-1 win over champions Manchester United at Anfield.

However, the Liverpool skipper is recovering well after groin surgery and the Merseyside boss, who rejuvenated a deflated Liverpool squad when he took over in January, is hopeful the midfielder will be back from injury for the opening game of the Premier League campaign against Sunderland.

“We start back Monday so we'll see how everybody is then," he told the club’s official website.

"Everything that has been done has been very positive for Steven so we are just hoping for the best for him.

“He deserves a bit of luck on the injury front. We won't put him under any undue pressure. All we'll say [is] everything has been fantastic so far.”

As well as praising his skipper, the manager commented that the club are looking to bring new faces to Anfield but refused to say who his top transfer targets are.

“I wouldn't mention anyone as a target for us," adding the Scot.

“We are obviously trying to bring people in and people are trying to take players from us.

“We are not going to speculate and be disrespectful and talk about other people at other clubs.

“Every manager I've seen interviewed on television has said exactly the same thing. That's the way it should be.”
